RAWLINS - The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality is taking comments on Kennecott Uranium's application to renew its interim mine stabilization permit through May 27.
The uranium mine the permit is for is located near the Kennecott's Sweetwater Uranium Mill 42 miles northwest of Rawlins in Sweetwater County.
Kennecott is applying for a renewal of its current permit to stabilize the mine, or keep it open for another five years and ready for mining to resume, although the company is not mining any of the uranium it contains.
The complete renewal application can be reviewed at the company office in the uranium mill or the DEQ's District office in Lander or main office in Cheyenne.
Comments on the application are being accepted through May 27 by the Land Quality Division of the DEQ, Herschler Building, 122 W. 25 St., Cheyenne 82002.
A public hearing on the application is scheduled for 9 a.m. .June 9 at the Western Wyoming College boardroom.
