tailings impoundment shown in this aerial photograph to the right is the Sweetwater
Uranium Project tailings impoundment. The Sweetwater Mill is the only remaining
uranium mill in Wyoming. It is a sixty (60) acre Hypalon lined impoundment designed
to retain uranium mill tailings. The tailings impoundment is the large, black
pond in the lower right hand corner of the photograph. (Photograph

The impoundment shown to
the left is UMETCO Minerals Corporation's Gas Hills tailings impoundment which is in reclamation. A discussion about groundwater at the UMETCO Gas Hills
Site is presented elsewhere in this web site. This impoundment is being reclaimed.
It adjoins Two (2) other uranium mill tailings sites also under reclamation. These
other sites are the American Nuclear Site and Pathfinder Mines Corporation's Lucky

| The International Uranium (USA) Corporation tailings impoundment shown to the
right is located at their White Mesa Mill located near Blanding, Utah.
It is one of the two remaining uranium mills in Utah.

| The construction, operation
and reclamation of uranium mill tailings impoundments are regulated by both the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) under 40 CFR Part 61 Subpart W (NESHAPs) and by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
(NRC) under 10 CFR 40 (Domestic Licensing of Source Material). In addition,
various NRC regulatory guides, staff technical positions (STPs) and NUREG documents
also regulate the construction, operation and reclamation of uranium mill tailings
impoundments. |
